Emergence and rise of the professional woman writer from playwright and Royalist spy Aphra Behn (1640-89) to novelist and proto-feminist Charlotte Bronte (1816-55). How women writers dealt with criticism for writing publicly, placing each author and text in its historical and literary context. Range of poets, playwrights, and novelists including Eliza Haywood, Frances Burney, and Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Create original solo performance and theatre work. Skills to draw from the specificity of unique individual experiences, connecting with ideas, issues and questions that resonate with race, class, gender, environmental and global issues. Creative and critical tools to to connect the personal with the political and see the solo voice as a powerful and potent form of artistic expression. Focus on and hone individual creative talents in writing, devising, composing, producing and creating work. Examine the work of a range of solo artists practicing in the UK; attend live performances and if possible, meet and interview some of the artists. 15-minute solo performance culminates quarter.

Case studies of four or five current productions in British theatre. Syllabus will be designed around productions of contemporary and canonical British works in London, Stratford upon , and Oxford playing at the time of study. Analysis of the works in the context of `the now and then¿ of British theatre history. Close readings of scripts, contextualization of the work in its sociopolitical context, and critiques of the live productions.
