HUMBIO 139E: Sport and Exercise Medicine

This is an upper division course taught by the course directors and guest lecturers (experts from the field of sports and exercise medicine), with a common theme of injury and illness prevention in sport and physical activity. The course is organized into three modules: Disease Prevention by Design, Concussion in Sport, and Injury Prevention in Sport and Exercise. The topics include wellness and the prevention of chronic disease, the balance point between health and harm in sports, clinical and sports biomechanics, injury prevention theories, ethical issues in return-to-play decisions, the role of sports medicine in the prevention of chronic disease through exercise, and common sports injuries and illnesses. Students will develop critical reading and thinking skills as well as oral presentation skills and the confidence to engage in verbal exchange. Every other class session is a discussion class involving hands-on activities and group discussions.
