CHINLANG 6: Beginning Conversational Chinese, First Quarter

This is the first of a 3-course sequence in Beginning Mandarin (CHINLANG 6, 7, 8) that focuses on developing basic oral communication skills. Hanyu pinyin is used (no reading/writing of Chinese characters is required), with special emphasis on developing accurate pronunciation. Students will learn to: a) introduce themselves in an informal social situation, b) engage in simple transactions, c) converse about themselves, their friends and families, and d) talk about activities in their daily lives.

CHINLANG 14C: First-Year Cantonese, Third Quarter

This is a 5-unit each, three-quarter series of First Year Cantonese for beginners. The primary objective of the series is to introduce to students the Cantonese language and culture through engaging activities in daily life situations to enhance speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at the beginning level. By the end of the year, students will acquire the knowledge of the sound system, basic grammar, and the ability to converse, as well as read and write the most basic Cantonese characters, needed in daily-life communication. Authentic materials and appropriate online resources are incorporated in the communicative activities and guided practices of the course to facilitate Cantonese learning.

CHINLANG 17: Beginning Conversational Cantonese, Third Quarter

Continuation of CHINLANG 16. This is the third of the 3-course series on beginning Cantonese. The primary objective of the beginning series is to help students build up a repertoire of vocabulary and basic grammatical structures so that they can: (a) introduce themselves in an informal social situation, (b) engage in simple transactions, (c) converse about themselves, their friends and families, and (d) talk about activities in daily lives. Authentic materials such as Cantopop and movie clips are incorporated in the courses and Internet tools are used to enhance learning. There is also an optional field trip to a karaoke bar, a dim-sum restaurant, or a Cantonese community every quarter to experience Cantonese culture. Prerequisite: CHINLANG 16 or consent of instructor.

Authentic materials such as classic and popular Cantopop, movie clips, and TV show clips are incorporated in the courses and appropriate online resources are used to facilitate learning. This is a 3-quarter series of advance Cantonese for students who have completed Intermediate Conversational Cantonese, or its equivalent, and wish to continue to develop their speaking and listening skills. The primary objective of the advance series is to continue exploring the Cantonese language and culture through a wide variety of engaging activities and multimedia materials designed to build on their speaking and listening proficiencies needed in traveling, studying, living, or working in Cantonese-speaking communities. Students will be exposed to authentic materials and participating in various activities, such as Cantonese in movies, in-depth discussion on topics related to personal interests, social, community and global issues, interview, documentaries, classic and popular Cantopop, and TV show clips.
