ANTHRO 42: Megacities (URBANST 142)

This class will examine a variety of ways that the city has been represented and understood in anthropology, architecture, literature, film, and journalism in order to better understand how everyday life and experience has been read in conjunction with urban forms. Issues covered will include the co-constitution of space and identities; consumption, spectacle, and economic disparity; transportation and health; colonialism and post-colonialism. Assignments will include writing and drawing projects based on close observation and reading.

ANTHRO 54N: For Makers and Thinkers: How to Use Art in Research and Vice Versa

This course is specifically designed for social science and humanities students who want to learn how to use art to expand their research questions and/or develop an art practice, and for arts students who want to find ways to deeply engage social science and humanities research in their practice. The course will: 1. Introduce students to the work of artists who used their practice to deeply engage social issues (Ian Rowland, Cornelia Parker, Fred Wilson and many others). These artists will be contextualized with readings including: critical commentaries on their work; theoretical literature; and primary literature on the issues they address (in these examples, slavery, material culture, museum studies). Critical questions will include: Why did the artist select particular media for their work? How does the art provide a different perspective on, engagement with, or relationship to the issues they address? How does the meaning of the art change with or without contextualization? How does this artist draw on and expand art history and other artists' work? Are there critical issues the work raises but is underpowered to address? 2. Provide support for students to work on their own quarter-length independent projects and research based in drawing, photography, creative writing, or other art practice which may shift according to research findings in the duration of the course. Part of the syllabus will be contingent on student projects. Regular group crit/support sessions will be held in class based on clear deadlines. 3. Introduce students to various methods of working with primary and source materials for arts-based projects, such as improvisation, juxtaposition, performance, role-play, "moment work" and scenography. "Makers" workshops will be held to introduce students to arts methods and may include: wax casting, life drawing, graphic art, etc. (The instructor will apply for Maker's funding to support these workshops.) Students will complete the course with a solid introduction to at least 20 contemporary artists and an understanding of how to discuss and contextualize artwork in the context of several disciplines: art, social science theory, and art criticism. They will also have experience in building and completing their own project and learn how to justify their work, understand how different art media impact their exploration and ultimate product, and work through various challenges in the process. They will also gain experience in crit sessions, which will be directed by the profession with a question-based format, in both giving and receiving feedback. They will document their work and learn how to produce a portfolio of the project.

Preparation for anthropological field research in other societies and the U.S. Data collection techniques include participant observation, interviewing, surveys, sampling procedures, life histories, ethnohistory, and the use of documentary materials. ANTHRO 121B: "The Will to Adorn": An Anthropology of Dress (AFRICAAM 121B, ANTHRO 221B, ARCHLGY 121B, ARCHLGY 221B)

This seminar explores sartorial practices as a means for examining formations of identities and structural inequalities across space and time. Building off the definition of dress, pulled from Mary Ellen Roach-Higgins and Joanne B. Eicher, this course examines sartorial practices as social-cultural practices, shaped by many intersecting operations of power and oppression including racism, sexism, and classism, that involve modifications of the corporal form (i.e., scarification, body piercings, and hair alteration) as well as all three-dimensional supplements added to the body (i.e., clothing, hair combs, and jewelry). The emphasis on intersecting operations of power and oppression within this definition of dress draws on Kimberlé Crenshaw's conceptualization of intersectionality. Through case studies and examples from various parts of the world, we will explore multiple sources of data - documentary, material, and oral - that have come to shape the study of dress. We examine how dress intersects with facets of identity, including race, age, ethnicity, sexuality, and class.

ANTHRO 122B: What's New in Australian Archaeology (ARCHLGY 122)

New techniques, new questions, and new approaches are changing our understanding of more than 50,000 years of human life in Australia. When did people first come to Australia? How did humans adapt to the unique, and changing, environment? At the same time, public debates are pushing archaeologists and heritage professionals to be more accountable, leading to questions like, what are the best practices for community-led archaeology? How should Australians commemorate the settler past? What about repatriation? This course will introduce the archaeology of Australia by exploring the latest research and debates playing out in the academic and public spheres. No prior archaeological experience is required.

This is a hands-on museum practicum course open to students of all levels that will culminate in a student-curated exhibit. It entails a survey of the range of museum responsibilities and professions including the purpose, potential, and challenges of curating collections. While based at the Stanford University Archaeology Collections (SUAC), we will visit other campus collections and sites. Students will plan and realize an exhibition at the Stanford Archaeology Center, gaining skills in collections management, research, interpretation, and installation.

The course discusses the politics and practices of exhumation of individual and mass graves. The problem of exhumations will be considered as a distinct socio-political phenomenon characteristic of contemporary times and related to transitional justice. The course will offer analysis of case studies of political exhumations of victims of the Dirty War in Argentina, ethnic cleansing in former Yugoslavia, the Holocaust, communist violence in Poland, the Rwandan genocide, the Spanish Civil War, and the war in Ukraine. The course will make use of new interpretations of genocide studies, research of mass graves, such as environmental and forensic approaches.

ANTHRO 152A: Human-Wildlife Conflicts in Past and Present (ARCHLGY 152)

Over the centuries, the progressing urbanization has led to humans' gradual displacement from nature, especially from the parts conventionally considered unpredictable and dangerous - such as wildlife. When the distance between wildlife habitats and human development shrinks, their contradictory needs collide, and conflict becomes inevitable. This course explores how human-wildlife conflicts (HWC) have shaped human-animal relationships in the past and present, and how ongoing climate change exacerbates them. In this class, we will investigate the underlying social, cultural, and ecological differences fueling disagreements between stakeholder groups entangled with wildlife in their daily routines. The course reviews the literature on the most common types of HWC through global case studies, first in the past and then in modern times. The discussed conflicts include the introduction of invasive species, wildlife diseases, habitat loss, species extinction, predatory species' adaptations to human-dominated landscapes, ecotourism development, the impact of human conflicts on wildlife populations, and others. Interactions with animals encompass many aspects of human lives and a myriad of academic disciplines, and this class emphasizes that social factors cannot be ignored in attempts to solve HWC. This class intersects anthropology, animal studies, political ecology, wildlife management, and archaeology. It will combine lectures, reading discussions, guest lectures, and interactive exercises. The course can be taken for 3, 4, or 5 units.

The goal of this seminar is to explore the phenomenological method and its relevance for ethnographic and historical research. We will discuss work by Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, Levinas, Petitmengin, and others in the philosophical tradition, and work by those in the empirical tradition like James, Jaspers, Parnas and Sass, Hufford, Taves, Radcliffe and others, and read them alongside ethnographic and historical work which sets out to understand subjective experiences like depression, trauma, identity, mysticism, smell and despair. ANTHRO 371: Living and Dying in the Contemporary World

This seminar explores how biological, political and social conditions transform and conjoin experiences of living and dying in the world today. Engaging contemporary ethnographies and social theory, we will examine how life and death, the natural and the social, the individual and the collective, are braided together in ways that challenge conclusions about what constitutes care, community, health, rights, and violence, among other issues. We will also reflect on whether and how the braiding together of these domains leaves room for the recognition of their singularity. Thus, an abiding question for this seminar is the relation of history to the present. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

ANTHRO 391A: Agency

Agency is commonplace and commonsensical in the humanities and social sciences. We use it to highlight the intention behind particular actions, and especially to mark the efficacy of actions of resistance to power and the overcoming of structure; actions we understand as those of self-making and historical change. Yet, for more than twenty years we have known that agency is not what it seems. Its key aspects presume what it ostensibly negates: autonomy presumes dependence, choice presumes necessity. Agency obscures questions of suffering and passion, and it often pictures the world from a standpoint appearing adjacent to that of the (liberal) individual. Most recently, there has been extensive discussion of distributed agency and that of non-humans. What are we to make of this widespread agency-talk? This course invites students to an experimental exploration of the genealogies of agency, what it arose in response to, what effects it has had and how the concept is today transformed. We will read archaeological, ethnographic and philosophical texts to ask: what does agency have to do with action and intention, with reason and emotion, with will and drive, with need and desire, with self-knowledge and discipline. What kinds of agents are we prepared to recognize; what (patients) does this blind us to? We will consider the tragic, ludic and comedic aspects of action. We will come to ask: Across the contests of the twentieth century what was agency good for? What is it good for now? This class will involve significant preparation and in-class writing exercises.
