Close reading of these two major Russian novels in which the theme of Moscow plays a most significant role. The place of both works in Soviet culture of Stalin's age. Contrast of artistic manners of the two authors in context of the different 19th century literary traditions they adhered to and their relation to the doctrine of Socialist realism imposed on Soviet writers during this epoch.
